Egypt And Mexican Culture Essays - Architectural Styles, Egyptology

Egypt And Mexican Culture For many centuries people have been fascinated by ancient cultures and treasures. During the last two centuries the science of archeology and modern inventions allowed people to get inside of the Egyptian and Mayan pyramids and discover the treasures of Egyptian pharaohs and Mayan rulers. Most of what we know about Egypt we owe to the pyramids. Thanks to Egyptian belief in the afterlife we can now find out about the civilization that existed nearly five thousand years ago. Egyptian culture is not the only culture that left us its heritage in pyramids. In America we find pyramids build by civilizations of Olmec and Maya about 7th century CE. These pyramids had different purposes and usage then the ones in Egypt but they stand as memorials to ancient civilizations as well. Egyptian people believed in life after death. One of the way pharaohs prepared themselves for the afterlife journey was by building a pyramid and putting there all their belongings and riches. Egyptian people believed that pharaoh is the closest person to the God and treated him accordingly. That is the reason for Egyptian tombs being full with the golden jewelry, precious stones and art objects. Most of the time art objects were not considered a treasury but they played their particular role in religious rituals. Jars were holding food and drinks for pharaoh's journey, so he would not get hungry and would have food and drinks to offer to the Gods. The figurative sculptures were suppose to accompany Ka ( spiritual entity) in its lonely stay or serve as a twin for the mummy. If something happens to the mummy the ka could use the sculpture of the pharaoh for the revelation. As well as for Egyptians religion was an everyday concern for many of the Maya, whether the dynastic ruler, the zealous priest, or the humble believer. Maya has an extensive religion structure which we can not know in details. Chac and Itzamna are the most famous gods of Mayan culture. Hunahpu and Xbalanque are among the most interesting mythical characters. One of the most crucial gods was Tlaloc, who was worshiped in various guises by the culture of Teotihuacan, the Toltec of Tula, and later Aztecs. The Maya received the cult of Tlaloc during the 4th century more or less. The Cauac Monster, also known as the Witz monster, is a dominant supernatural concept in Maya religion, as are caves, cenotes, and other holy places (Maya Civilization pars. 6). The Maya built shrines, temples, and pyramids in honor of their gods, as well as to their kings, who ruled by all-encompassing concept of Divine power. Most of Mayan pyramids are temples to the gods, not the burial tombs as in Egypt. Even though Maya sometimes buried there their rulers they always put the temple on the top of the pyramid. Egyptians had temples near the pyramid or right next to it for the ceremonial services, but it never was placed on top of the structure. Also buildings in both cultures have a lot in common in their visual characteristics they are different structures. Egyptian pyramids originally had smooth equal sides meeting on the top in the perfect apex. Mayan pyramids look like one huge stairway towards the sky. It reminds of earliest Egyptian structures-mastabas, where one layer of stones was put onto another creating the effect of pyramid. Also The Tikal Temple on Great Plaza was originally plastered white. Then the roof comb was painted with reds, blues, and other colors to accent the different areas of sculptural decoration. These roof combs were like giant billboards, with immense portrayals of the enthroned king, larger then life size (Cities pars.3). Egyptians never colored their religious structures. As well as in Egyptian pyramids, the stone used to construct Mayan pyramids is local limestone, obtained from nearby quarries. The ancient Maya had no stone tools but limestone is soft enough that the Maya could utilize chert tools to work the stone in to neat rectangular building blocks. Egyptian pyramids served as huge tombs and they were constructed in such a way so they would stand for thousand years. Egyptians did not know when the spirit would return into the dead body. Pyramids were constructed of rough stone blocks laid in horizontal rows, in a polygonal shape, with triangular sides rising to meet in the apex. Some were originally as high as 750 feet. The pyramids were built by taking blocks of granite to the workshops, measuring the blocks down the size, shaping the block and placing

Article Review pertaining to Ethics Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Review pertaining to Ethics - Article Example Most of these stories flowing within the companies are well established and openly expressed narratives with a clear design. However, some stories are fragmented and hidden from the public lime light. Stories have a moral position within organizations as they contain and deal with both bad and good issues. We can therefore conclude that story telling is a suitable tool for studying ethics within organizations (Gabriel, 2004). Stories on the other hand can be informative of leadership styles used within a company. This is because stories may refer to more democratic and empowering leadership. Instead of direct and intimidating command, stories are interpreted with a view to influence the listener or the follower. On the contrary, an empowering story may turn out to be disempowering to the follower or precisely to employees in an organization. Stories can also be used as a seduction or manipulation tool to staff in an organization. Manipulation in many cases is viewed as a non-ethical way of leadership. The use of hidden power is accounted for as stories are seen as latent way to influence followers (Boje, 2001). Plato stated that anyone who narrates the story governs. To further clarify; this means the narrator has the ability to influence followers through a discursive reality. The narrator can create a publicly expressed social reality and shape it to their desired motives. This places focus on ethical dimensions in leadership stories. Through this, an individual may have either good or bad intentions while narrating their story. The narrator may purse to conceal his intentions with manipulation unknowingly to the listener on the power wield attempts falling upon them. Thus, such a position of leadership is termed as bad and unethical (Ciulla, 2005). This begs the question of what kind of leader possess powerful story telling techniques and resources. A charismatic leader

Is Online Privacy Dead - Research Paper Example Despite being a digital world where every kind of transaction, application or interaction requires the disclosure of personal information, the privacy rules have become less relevant (Jose, 2013). Who should be held responsible? Should it be the individuals who fearlessly and un cautiously discloses all their personal information online or are we to blame those who are in custody of the same private information. The purpose of this research is, therefore, to delve deeper into this issue and find the root of the problem and suggest the possible cure to the same. The paper discusses whether online privacy is still in operation and how far it goes to secure personal information. Simply put, the paper discusses whether or not online privacy is dead. The Term Of Nakakainis In The Philippines English Language Essay

The Term Of Nakakainis In The Philippines English Language Essay Have you encountered a time when you are feeling really irritated or annoyed that you would just like to punch or slap a pesky person? When you are being disturbed by an utterly foolish person who asks nonsense questions? Or when you did not get to watch your favorite soap opera? These situations make you say NAKAKAINIS!!, right? But Filipino youth these days barely use the original meaning of nakakainis irritated, annoyed and troubled (Nakakainis in English, Yahoo Answers. June 2010). Filipino youth would say NAKAKAINIS if they find things which are interesting like after watching this video (Ayos sa Trip si Manong, You Tube . June 2010), seeing this very cute picture (Baby Cheeks, Flickr [picture file]. November 2005) or cracking Filipino funny jokes like Q: bakit bawal maligo ng sabay-sabay ang mga kalbo sa Jacuzzi? A: Kasi, magmu-mukha silang pinipritong squid ball!! They would say NAKAKAINIS!! even if they are not feeling irritated or annoyed. This is the NAKAKAINIS of our youth . We can also say that it is the modern nakakinis for the youth. NAKAKAINIS is a form of expression that is used by Filipino youth. They use it when they see interesting pictures, videos, mannerisms or stuffed toys. The word nakakainis has a prefix nakaka- and a root word inis. In Filipino, the prefix or unlaping naka- is used when the word will be used as a conjugate in the sentence. If the essay or sentence must be written in formal, the conjugate should be written having its prefix nakaka- first, and the root word itself. Example: nakakabaliw, nakakamatay, nakakagalit. If it is informal, the prefix naka- should be written fist, followed by the first syllable of the word, and the root word itself. Example: nakababaliw nakamamatay, nakagagalit. (Panlapi, Gintong Pamana: Aklat sa Wika 3. 2006) The word nakakainis has two different meanings the feeling of irritation or annoyance and the reaction of the showing of interest in a thing. Nakakainis, in English, means irritating or annoying. According to the definition of annoyance, if the feeling of irritations and annoyance mount up, our feeling outbursts and thus, the feeing of irritation and annoyance will be changed or result in anger or frustration.(Annoyance, Experience Festival. n.d.) It is an uncomfortable feeling that can be the reason of a sudden outburst of anger. Sometimes, if a person is really irritated or annoyed, he could not control his emotions and do something rush that would result to a big problem. People who doesnt have control in their feelings would shout or hurt the feelings of the person who irritates or annoys them. When we get angry because of irritation and annoyance, we should have presence of mind to prevent unwanted events to happen like fighting. The expression nakakainis, in a high-pitched tone, can mean the reaction after seeing interesting things. For example, a teenager sees you carrying a cute Crayola pillow and her reaction will surely be: Its so cute! Where did you buy that? Nakakainis! or I would also like to have one! Nakakainis ang pagka-cute nya! In my high school, my classmates used nakakainis as an expression whenever they find cute and interesting things. Making a person happy of satisfying a persons need is the same as pleasing them while annoyance or irritation is when somebody or something making you feel uneasy by continuously bothering you. Pleasing a person is not easy as annoying or irritating a person. We can contrast irritation or annoyance to pleasing a person. It takes time and effort to please somebody. Most of the time, people please others because they are scared of rejection. They are scared to be left alone and thus, making themselves always available even though they are busy. People-pleasers, those people who please others, feel that people are taking advantage of them because of their low self esteem. People-pleasers always suffer because of low esteem and they cant say no to people who ask them favors or requests. Ms. Carla Valencia stated in her blog that those people who like to please others are scared of people rejecting them, preventing problems between other people, problem on always degrading themselves beca use they are not confident enough on their abilities, skills or knowledge. (Low Self Esteem and Pleasing People, More Self Esteem. n.d.) Stress can be the result of being irritated and annoyed always. As stated earlier, being irritated or annoyed can lead to emotions such as anger and frustration. We all know that stress has a great effect in our lives. It makes us age prematurely, can lead us to have psychosomatic illness and greatly affect our job. Stress can be more of a factor in determining your physical age than the number of candles you blow out each year. (#7 Effects of Stress, About. November 2007) Because of stress, a person can look older than his present age. A good example for this one is the commercial from the StressTabs. In the commercial, Giselle Sanchez, the host of the bar, thought that a looking sick and old girl was already in her 50s so she called her as lola. Then the boyfriend of the girl told Giselle Sanchez that she is his girlfriend and she looks like that because she is stressed and tired from work. But the girl, after taking StressTabs, looked like she transformed into a pretty, fine, youn g-looking girl. This commercial is telling us that being stress always would ruin our beautiful face and will only look older. According to the number five of the effects of stress, it is stated that thinking negative things and being emotionally stressed results in psychosomatic illness. We should be worrying about it because it can be treated like in any other kind of sickness. (#5 Effects of Stress, About. November 2007) People can cure themselves by attending Yoga classes. By doing Yoga, stress will go away and it can refrain us from getting or acquiring psychosomatic illnesses. People should always think positive things to also prevent from being stressed and sick. We, people, need to have energy to work. But, if we are always stressed, we cant do our job well. People need to rest to have energy. The Filipino expression kakagigil or a intense emotion, urge or feeling that a person gets over with something that he/she thinks is totally wonderful and together describes carefully how a person responds or want to respond (Getting Gigil with It, Culture Fried. March 2010), can be compared to kakainis. NAKAKAINIS is a form of expression that is used by Filipino youth. They use it when they see interesting pictures, videos, mannerisms or stuffed toys. The expressions that we daily use reflects on our attitudes. Most expressions are slang and vulgar words. We should be wary of people because they will base their first impressions on other people by just hearing their expressions. Especially here in the Philippines, most expressions used are curses, slang and other vulgar words. We should be careful in every word we say. Expressions are like any other words we encounter. As we all know, words are dynamic. Thus, the expressions we daily use could also evolve its meaning in years to come.

Moksha and Salvation

Since the fall of man and the manifestation of sin, a wedge was placed between God and man. Man has strived to establish a reconnection with God through a variety of sources. Salvation is the source or bridge that connects man to God. Every religion has its own philosophy concerning the path of salvation. â€Å"The goal of most Indian religions is to break the cycle of karma and samsara and be free from the burden of life. This breaking of life is called Moksha† (Hopfe & Woodard, 2009, [pg. 85]). Moksha is the Hindu term used which liberates the soul from karma . This liberation can be experienced through death or while one is yet living. In observing the Hindu concept of salvation in comparison to Christianity, there are some similarities as well as differences. It is the Hindu belief that salvation, referred to as Moksha â€Å"can be obtained through three paths: knowledge (inana), devotion (bhakti), ritual works or karma† (McDowell & Stewart, 2006). These are the three concepts that illustrate the differences and similarities in both religions of how salvation can be attained. In observing the similarities, the first similarity is the theory that salvation can be attained through knowledge. This type of knowledge is spiritual. In Hinduism it is believed that â€Å"Humans basic problem is not wickedness but ignorance. People are ignorant about the true nature of reality and believe that they are separated from Brahman† (Hope& Woodard, 2009, [pg. 105]). In the Hindu society, it is only when Moksha is obtained that one is able to see life from a clear perspective. According to Upanishads, â€Å"When true knowledge of the illusion of life is realized, one can be freed from the bondage of life and achieve unity with Brahman† (Hope& Woodard, 2009, [pg. 89]). In contrast, in Christianity Satan is referred to as a liar and a deceiver. It is his duty to distort the minds of God’s children and cause them to lose focus of their divine purpose on the earth. He creates the illusion that that there is no Hell and neither is there a God. Thus, many of God’s people continue to live destructive lifestyles as if they will live forever. The second similarity that both Christianity and Hinduism share is the belief that its liberation cannot be found in earthly things. Believers of both religions are challenged to disregard earthly things and esteem heavenly things. In a world that is so full of hate, suffering, misfortune and tragedy; people are on desperately searching to fill some type of void. From a Hindu perspective, â€Å"Humans do not recognize the Brahman but instead try to cling to the objects of life-which are like mirages-they keep slipping away from our grasp† (Hopfe &Woodard, 2009, [pg. 05]. Many Christians find themselves plagued with the same problem; they begin to chase after the things of the world rather than the things of God. Concerning material things Griffiths states, â€Å"There are four ends of life, pleasure (kama), wealth (artha), duty (dharma) and liberation. The modern world recognized the first three but has lost sight of the last, yet without this goal of final liberation, of ultimate transcendence, all the other goals lead to frustration. †¦. (Griffiths, 1982, pg. [66]). It is only when one comes to the realization that the world and all it has to offer is temporary, and can’t bring true fulfillment; will they then center their priorities on things eternal. Though the similarities of salvation are quite similar, when comparing both religions; there are also some major differences. One of the major differences between how both religions perceive salvation is that Hinduism teaches that salvation must be earned. The theory â€Å"what goes around, comes around is what the religion is centered around. Through karma, or doing good things; one can either gain salvation or escape reincarnation. However, Christianity teaches that all of our works are just like filthy rags. In Christianity it is taught that salvation is given through grace. Ephesians 2: 8-9 says, â€Å"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and not this from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast† (NIV, 2007, Ephesians 2:8-9). The most profound difference is that that Hinduism recognizes no single path to gaining salvation As stated previously, â€Å"Moksha can be obtained through three paths: knowledge (inana), devotion (bhakti), ritual works or karma (McDowell & Stewart, 2006). Another method of attaining freedom is through the exercise of Yoga. Through various Yoga exercises one seeks to connect with Brahman. In contrast, the path to salvation in Christianity requires one simple confession; this confession is found in Romans 10:9: â€Å"That if you confess ith your mouth â€Å"Jesus is Lord† and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved† (NIV, 2007, Romans 10:9). Jesus Christ is the way to salvation none can attain it any other way, for He said, â€Å"I am the way, the truth and the life†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (NIV, 2007, John 14:6). In summary, the path to salvation is sought in various ways through both Hinduism and Christianity. Each individual in these religio ns are in search for something that they realize the world can’t offer. It is only when one understands this simple concept that the path to freedom begins.
